How to play pocket Kings and Win.
Pocket Kings is one of the most powerful starting hands in Texas Holdem poker when played right. There are a lot of amateurs that get greedy with this hand and try to let as many people in the hand as possible. This is not an invincible hand. There is no such thing, even the strongest hand like Aces can get run down if you let to many people in the hand. So in order to improve your odds of winning with pocket kings you will need to be aggressive pre flop. So this is one of those hands that no matter what position you are in you need to raise the flop and narrow it down to one or 2 callers. If to many people see this flop someone can easily mess up a great hand by hitting two pair with a crap hand o maybe someone playing Ace rags and hitting an Ace. So the key here is for you to narrow down the field to premium hands. Now if you do that you will win with pocket kings more times then just limping in. Don’t make a mistake like doubling the blinds you want to make a raise that is going to get marginal hands out of the hand. Then once the flop comes even If there is an Ace on the board make a post flop bet. If you think you are beat and the guy has the Ace get out of the hand. Don’t fall in to the entitlement trap like some people and play out a hand when you damn well know you are beat. So if you think youre Kings are Dead lay them down and cut your losses. Here is an example of how you misplay Kings and get hammered because you won’t lay them down. This is an example that paid about $165 on a 50cent table I was on a few days ago. I got the $165 bucks because the guy that had the pocket Kings loves to slow play everything.
So this is what happened. I am sitting in an online poker room at a 50-cent ring game. I catch pocket 2’s in middle position so I try to limp in to see a cheap flop the guy before who is super tight. I saw him re raise to 1.50 pre flop with Aces earlier. So he makes it $1 to play I of course call that. If he would have made it $5 or even $3 bucks with his pocket kings I would have tossed my 2’s. Anyways I call the flop comes 728. The guy with the kings bets 4 bucks I re raise it to 10 bucks there was another guy in the hand with us he ended up having A8 so he hit top pair. The guy with the Kings re raises me to 20bucks. I go all in over the top of him he calls and the guy with A8 calls to which I found crazy.
The turn comes it’s a 10 the turn comes with a 7 so I have a full house against pocket Kings and A8. This was a hand I should not have been in. If the guy with the Kings would have made at least a 5 times the blinds raise I would have folded but just doubling the blinds is not going to chase a small pocket pair out. Then with that flop it put me in a great position because my hand was not obvious.
So this is how slow playing your pocket Kings can backfire on you. Since you aren’t going to lay them down so easily. Its that old entitlement effect. You have the highest pair there is nothing on the board to scare you. So play your Kings aggressively.
