 Poker Tell – Discouraging a bet.
Being able to spot when a poker player is trying to discourage a bet can be quite profitable. In online poker this tell is somewhat available but its usually just in the form of big bets that try and convey a strong hand and try to discourage you from betting or calling. So in online poker this really falls in to the betting pattern side of things. In live poker games bets are truly discouraged by certain gestures the player will make to convey a strong hand and to keep you from making a bet this is usually a sign of a weak hand. Here are some examples of what this poker tell will look like. Your opponent will reach for his chips or even reach in combination with starring you down. This tell usually involves them reaching for their chips like they are going to make bet with their strong hand. Usually someone with a strong hand will do the opposite they will look a weak and not reach for their chips. This is because they want you too bet to get more money in. So if you think about this logically why would someone start grabbing for their chips to keep you form betting when they have a strong hand wouldn’t they want you to put more money in the pot. Did I mention that the chip grabbing is generally done out of turn. What I mean is the poker player will grab for their chips before it is their turn to bet. They do this because they are trying to solicit a reaction out of you or they are trying to keep you from betting. Sometimes people on draws use this method to keep you from betting so they can see a free card. Now they choice is your. When you see a player exhibit this tell you can now bet a marginal hand and take down a pot or you can even bluff. When someone has a weak hand, or a drawing hand which is the weakest of all you can usually take them off of it. This poker tell will allow you to pick the spot. One nice play when you see them trying to discourage your bet is to ck then let them bet out and stick in a nice size reraise. Most people only check raise with a really strong hand so your check raise will likely convey true strength and the player will fold. Another method is to just bet right in to them even if your hand is marginal it is likely to be bettor then theirs. You will see this poker tell exhibited by lots of different types of players so it can come in quite handy. Next time you see someone reach out of turn for their chips while staring people down in an intimidating manner see how the hand plays out. You will find most of the time the player had a weak hand.
