Playing Draws
A lot of people like to play their draws by just calling and trying to hit. This seems like a good way to play draws however it really does not leave you any possibilities if u do not hit your draw. The other thing is the other guy betting may be on a draw himself. So here is a few ways to play your draws and still take down the pot with a semi bluff even with out hitting.
Any time you are on a draw you are chasing which is something that you need to be very selective with. The kind of hands that are worth chasing are open ended str8 draws or a nut flush draw. Now that I say this, this is not always true. These types of hands are the ones you can invest some money in because the odds of hitting are decent. The bst is an open ended straight draw and a flush draw. With one of those you have more outs then you can count. With a flush and open ended straight draw you have about a 66 percent chance of hitting. Now lets talk about how to play your draws.
Lets say you are in good position and someone raises the flop 5 times the binds you have some extra chips to play with so you call with 68 spades.
The flop comes Ace spades 10 of spades 7 of hearts. Now you just hit a gut shot straight draw flush draw. Lets say you put your opponent on something like AQ or AK. So if you complete this hand youre going to get paid big. He bets now here you can either call or re raise. Its good to reraise here and see if you can slow him down to buy yourself a free card on the river. Chances are if you re raise and he just calls he will ck to you expecting another bet from you. So the reraise will buy you a free card. The other thing this does is lets say the other guy is on QQ and you make the reraise you may just take the pot down right there. Ok lets say he just calls your reraise. The turn comes J of clubs. He checks. Bingo now you just bought our self a free card or you have a choice here as well. If you sense a lot of weakness and you don’t even think he has the Ace bet again on a semi bluff. If you think he is strong and has the Ace then I would check to and hope ot hit on the river. Lets say you choose b and you check because you think he has the Ace with a solid kicker. The turn comes 9 of hearts. Which is even better now you just completed a gusthot straight draw. He wont put you on that if another spade would have came he would have been leery of the flush. So now he bets because you showed weakness on the turn and checked it then you go over the top of him and take a huge stack of chips. This is how you should play all your draws. The other thing is that since you made the reraise and you don’t hit and your opponents isn’t super strong you can still bluff on the river if something hits that you can represent.
Another thing this type of play does is get you more action on your big hands. Because now the other players wont know did he just reraise me with the nuts or is he drawing. Since they wont be sure when you have big hand you may even get someone reraising you because they think you are aggressive and maybe betting with a semi bluff. So you see this doe a few things. Buys you a free card, switches up your game keeping your opponent guessing. Also if you get caught occasionally your opponents will see you bluff.
This is the big THING don’t chase when someone puts you all in. You want to stay in control of the hand. If someone puts you all in you have to hit. About the only kind of hand you could take that chance on is a open ended straight draw and a flush draw. Even then it is risky. Do you want this one hand decide the fate of the entire game or just live to see another day. If the price of poker gets to expensive get out of the hand don’t try and complete a draw at all cost.
