 Spotting Poker Tells – Based on a Players Appearance and Actions.
The Poker tells I am discussing in this section are not going to apply to online poker play but are more for when you are playing live poker in a casino, a local poker room or some sort of home game. In home games most of the players you will likely know already so this may not be as important however you can see how closely it resembles how the players play. These poker tells are more generalizations about people and using them to form an opinion of how they might play before you actually play against them. So these poker tells are more like generalizations until you get some evidence to the contrary.
Most people tend to play poker like they live their life. So watching how someone carries themselves, how they dress and speak or interact with others is a definite clue as to what kind of poker player they might be. Also their manner of dress is a clue. If you see a guy in a suit that is neatly pressed his tie is on not loosened. You are likely looking at a conservative player, however if you see a guy in a suit, his ties is loosened his suit is wrinkled up he is more likely to be loose and gamble. Since poker is a game of patience and self control the way a poker player lives life is likely to be a mirror image of his poker game. If you know the guy is aggressive in real life and confrontational he is likely going to be an aggressive player when playing poker as well. Another good indicator is on how a guy buys in to the poker game. If he is pulling his money out and making a scene where everyone can see he is likely to be in a gambling mood, if he is hiding it he is likely going to be tight either because he values money or it may also be all he has and he doesn't want you to know. If you notice this play his wallet. A guy that cant buy back in is going to be tighter then normal because he cant afford to loose. I have a game I play in sometimes and one of the guys is an aggressive guy buy nature, he has lots of tattoos and talks a lot of trash at the table. What is he likely to play like? Well I will tell you he is loose and likes to gamble. Its these kinds of observations of how people present themselves that can give you some clues as to how they might play. Another poker tell based on this is how the poker player handles his chips. Are they messy and all over the place or are they neatly stacked and organized? Someone that has a messy chip stack is more likely to be a loose player willing to gamble. Where if a poker player has his chips neatly stacked and maybe even lined up where all the markings are the same you are likely looking at someone that is conservative and has the patience to only play good hands.
Poker tells are a huge part of the game of poker and the more you know the better you will be able to read your opponents which means more chips in your stack at the end of the night. SO next time you get the chance to observe someone that you play poker with think about what kind of person they are and then see how they play poker and compare the two. You will find that these poker tells will hold true above average. However some people will fool you and represent one image and play totally different. That is why these poker tells are based in a vacuum. If you play with a guy for a while you will see how much holds true but untill you have any better Intel you can use these generalizations until proven false. Most of these general tells are just based on observing people and how they handle life. It is real likely they will handle the game of poker the same way.
