How to stop your opponents from Chasing.
How to stop poker players from chasing when you have a good hand but there are draws is a million dollar question. Some people will chase a flush or a straight at any price and if you know this it will be difficult to stop them. Lets talk about how to stop most poker players from chasing most of the time. Generally when you want to stop people form chasing a hand you want to make the pot odds against them to hit as well as attacking their stack. If you are able and you have the chips you what to make a big enough bet that it will threaten the other guys stack to where they would have to risk a huge part of their stack to play the draw. This will stop most people.
Here is an example lets say you get dealt pocket 7s and you try to limp in and see a cheap flop. One guy raises the blinds to 3 times the blind. You decide to call.
The flop comes 7 Spades 8 Spades J Clubs. You have three other players in the hand with you. Now you would love to check here and let someone else lead out with the betting, however you have a flush draw and a low end double end straight draw on the board. Remember there are lots of people that love to play suited connectors or semi connectors even with a preflop raise. So in this situation with all these draws you need to make a strong bet. I would bet the pot or even over bet it a little. Now if you have a manic at the table that you know is going to chase it at all cost you might just opt for a strong bet but not anything that is going to get you committed to the pot.. Usually you want to make a strong enough bet hereto chase all the draws out which you can usually accomplish by betting the pot or at least a 1/3 of their stack. Now if you do have someone at your table that has proven that they will chase at all cost you may have to adjust by making a good size bet on the turn and a bigger one after the turn if nothing comes then if they don’t hit on the river make another good size bet if you know they didn’t hit their draw. I hate this kind of play but I have found times where you are up against someone that will not fold a good draw no matter the cost. This is unfortunate but its just a reality of playing the game. At higher levels it does not happen as much but at micro levels like 1 and $2 tables and lower you will see this. Another place this is prevalent is in online poker at low stakes.
